The Bernard & Millie Duker Children's Hospital at Albany Med is a 125-bed facility devoted exclusively to the medical needs of infants, children and adolescents, and is the referral center for all seriously ill and injured children from 25 counties in upstate New York and western New England. It is staffed by 140 physicians trained in 40 subspecialties and more than 400 pediatric nurses, therapists, social workers and child-life specialists.

  • Only Childhood Cancer Center in Region. The Melodies Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders has 5,000 patient visits each year.

  • Only Pediatric Emergency Center in Region. The new Massry Family Children’s Emergency Center is the only pediatric emergency department in northeastern New York and western New England.

  • Top Kidney Transplant Program. Albany Med's transplant program is ranked highest in the United States for transplant graft survival rate.

  • Groundbreaking Cardiac Treatments and Outcomes. Albany Med's cardiac team was the first in the region to implant the LVAD, left ventricular assisted device, to treat end-stage heart failure and to receive Joint Commission certification. Albany Med's cardiac surgery team performed northeastern New York's first transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). 

  • First in Region to Perform MitraClip Procedure. Albany Med is the first and only hospital in the Capital Region to perform a life-saving heart repair procedure in patients who have mitral valve disease and cannot undergo traditional open heart surgery. Our Heart Team uses a minimally invasive technique to insert a MitraClip, repairing a patient's "leaky" heart valve.

  • Comprehensive Heart Care. Because of a team focus on a “silent killer,” patients with high blood pressure seen by an Albany Med physician are nearly twice as likely to have their condition under control compared to patients with hypertension nationwide.

  • Lifesaving Trauma Center. As the trauma center for the region, Albany Med is often the busiest trauma center in all of New York State. Our highly trained emergency and trauma team provides a unique and lifesaving benefit for our region. Albany Med is the only hospital in the region with a roof-top helipad, a dedicated Pediatric Emergency Department (opening in 2018) and emergency coverage of every medical specialty (except dental).

  • Advanced Stroke Treatments. Albany Med is the only hospital in the region that has The Joint Commission's Advanced Certification as a Primary Stroke Center, a national certification program awarded to hospitals that meet rigorous standards for stroke diagnosis and treatment.

  • Alzheimer’s Center for the Region. The Alzheimer’s Center at Albany Med is designated by the New York State Health Department as a Center of Excellence for Alzheimer's Disease.

  • Advanced Epilepsy Treatment. Albany Med is designated a Level 4 Epilepsy Center by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers, indicating a center offers the most advanced medical and surgical diagnostic and treatment options for epilepsy.

  • AIDS Treatment. Only state-designated AIDS Treatment Center.

  • Region's Only Level IV Perinatal Center. Albany Med provides transport and consultation services to birthing hospitals in our 25-county service area.

  • Only Cleft-Craniofacial Center in Northeastern New York. This comprehensive center is comprised of a team of experts who treat the full spectrum of cleft and craniofacial conditions, from birth to adulthood.
