Albany Medical College Holds 2018 Commencement Ceremonies

Albany Medical College awarded 225 degrees in May during commencement ceremonies at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center.

Medical degrees (M.D.) were awarded to 148 students. In addition, 18 students received Master of Science degrees in Nurse Anesthesiology, 40 received Master of Science degrees in Physician Assistant Studies, and five received either Master of Science or doctoral degrees in the biomedical sciences. Fourteen students received master’s degrees from the Alden March Bioethics Institute.

This year’s speaker was Feng Zhang, Ph.D., a bioengineer whose pioneering work on the genome editing tool CRISPR has had enormous impact on experimental science and has helped to accelerate biomedical research in a number of fields, including immunology, clinical medicine and cancer biology. Dr. Zhang’s work was recognized in 2017 with the Albany Medical Center Prize in Medicine and Biomedical Research.

Dr. Zhang is an Investigator at the McGovern Institute for Brain Research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he serves as the James and Patricia Poitras Professor in Neuroscience and Associate Professor in the Departments of Brain and Cognitive Sciences and of Biological Engineering. He also is a Core Member of the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard.

Dr. Zhang was awarded an honorary degree. The College also awarded an honorary degree posthumously to Christopher King, M.D., who served as chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine until his passing earlier this year.

Also addressing the graduates were Vincent Verdile, M.D., ’84, The Lynne and Mark Groban, M.D., ’67, Distinguished Dean of Albany Medical College, and senior executive vice president for system care delivery at Albany Medical Center, and Robert T. Cushing, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Albany Medical Center, as well as student representatives of the Class of 2018.

In July, the graduating medical students will begin their residency training at medical facilities throughout the nation, including Albany Medical Center.
