Message from Chair, Sandra Shin, MD
Pathology is the core science focused on the study of diseases. The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Albany Medical Center performs diagnostic assessment of samples of bodily fluids and tissues to help determine a diagnosis of a disease or condition, and works side by side with our colleagues in many specialties as part of the patient care team.
Because we are located at an academic medical center, our pathology department is among the most highly credentialed in the region. In addition to winning numerous teaching awards at the Albany Medical College, our physicians, clinical lab professionals, residents and medical students are frequent presenters at national and international conferences. We are actively involved in cutting-edge studies in a variety of research areas most notably in the use of molecular biomarkers to personalize cancer patient treatment.
Our laboratory subspecialty services include: cellular immunology, clinical chemistry, reproductive sciences, forensic technology, blood banking and immunohematology, cytopathology, surgical pathology, gastrointestinal pathology, genitourinary pathology, pediatric pathology, neuropathology, dermatopathology, hematopathology and molecular pathology.
Our phlebotomy service is operated by a team of trained phlebotomists who are responsible for collecting blood specimens. In the hospital, the Blood Lab is located just inside the main entrance. Additionally, we have six convenient Capitol Region locations—all staffed by a full service lab and fully trained phlebotomists. Results and reports are returned to your physician’s office regardless of which blood collection site you visited.
At Albany Medical Center, our priority is ease, accuracy, and optimal utilization of your laboratory tests.
