Message from Chair Steven Stain, MD

StainWelcome to the Department of Surgery at Albany Med. I am pleased to lead an extraordinary group of faculty and staff whose dedication to excellence serves to enhance the reputation of Albany Med as the region’s leading health care provider and only academic medical center.

Focused on our three-part mission of education, research and patient care, the Department is comprised of more than 60 full-time, board-certified physicians. Our faculty and surgical staff comprise a wide range of backgrounds and interests with many physicians holding dual certifications or other advanced degrees. For our 100 residents and fellows, Albany Med’s department of surgery encompasses the breadth of surgical specialties, with clinical expertise and training programs in general surgery, vascular surgery, neurological surgery, urology, cardiothoracic surgery, pediatric surgery, otolaryngology, and minimally invasive surgery.

Albany Med’s distinguished surgeons offer patients throughout eastern New York and western New England a broad range of experience and skills. Utilizing state-of-the-art technology such as the new Philips Ingenia Wide-Bore 3 Tesla MRI scanner; the da Vinci Robotic System; the HeartMate II, the only long-term LVAD (left ventricular assisted device) heart pump; and many other advanced technologies, our surgeons are able to successfully treat more serious and complex conditions than ever before and achieve better than ever outcomes for patients.

With a long history of surgical achievements and many "firsts," including most recently the first single port, robotic assisted cholecystectomy performed in northeastern New York, Albany Med continues to move forward to offer patients the latest advances and most innovative techniques  in everything from bariatric and cancer surgery to endovascular and organ transplant surgery, neurosurgery and pediatric surgery.

Furthermore, as the region’s Level 1 Trauma Center and, in fact, the busiest trauma center in New York State, our surgeons stand by 24/7 to help trauma patients at a critical moment.

I invite you to learn more about the Department of Surgery here on the website.
